There are a lot of subtleties involved with human conversation. In addition to the words themselves, tone, body language, and facial expression give context to the meaning of our speech. Because an increasing amount of conversation is done through brief text messages, it can be easy to misinterpret what the person is really trying to say.
Did what you say offend them? Are they actually fine with the fact that you canceled plans? Do they actually want to see the movie you suggested? With only a few short words, it can be tricky to tell.
Sure, adding an emoji helps clear up some of the confusion, but the older you get, the less inclined you are to use them.
Thankfully, Jimmy Kimmel clears everything up by breaking down text messages and describing what key clues to look for that indicate if someone really is OK with what you just said, or if you need to reverse it and apologize immediately.
